外链是搜索引擎优化（SEO）的核心之一，是指从其他网站指向到你的网站的链接，能够点击直接去到你的网站。例如在其他网站有一个这样的链接〈a href="https://www.yiqnet.com"〉深圳网页制作公司〈/a〉，那么，这就是一个外链。
注意：通过某个页面中转，再跳转到你的网站，这不是真正意义上的外链，对SEO几乎没有作用。网站管理员应注意区分。
在搜索引擎的眼里，有一个从其他网站指向到你的网站的链接，被视为是一种投票或声明。它相当于告诉搜索引擎，这是一个什么样的网站或网页，于是，搜索引擎记了下来。当有许许多多这样的外链指向到你的网站，那就相当于你的网站被投票或声明了许多次，于是搜索引擎认为，你的网站就是做这个的。以上文中的链接为例，它明确地告诉搜索引擎，https://www.yiqnet.com就是“深圳网页制作公司”，当有人搜索“深圳网页制作公司”这个词时，由于你的网站由于被多次投票，很有可能被优先展示。
通过与其他网站交换链接，达成增加外链的目的。交换链接是指在A网站中增加一个指向B网站的链接，同样，B网站中也增加一个指向A网站的链接。这种交换是互利的，相当于相互投了一票。如果你的网站中配置了友情链接交换系统，则可以很方便地交换链接。
在其他网站中自主发布内容并在内容中增加指向你的网站的链接，常见于博客、社区、论坛中。例如新浪博客、Facebook等平台就提供了建立个人博客的服务，并且可以在博客里发布一些文章，能够插入一些链接，这实际上就为我们增加外链提供了很好的帮助。
